about

The Ruts were a hugely influential band to the sound coming out of the DC punk scene in the ‘80’s. A British band contemporary with the Damned and the Clash, the Ruts crafted a very smooth mixture of punk and reggae, which made a lot of sense to anyone familiar with the Bad Brains at the time. After the singer died in 1980, the band continued as Ruts D.C. (D.C. standing for the Latin term da capo, meaning "back to the beginning"). They released the legendary reggae-influenced album Rhythm Collision in July 1982 on Bohemian Records, in collaboration with Mad Professor, a renowned dub producer. The album had only a dub version of Weak Heart, while the vocal version came out on a 12” in 1983. Although Bobby (7 League Boots singer) vinyl versions of both the album and the 12” in used record shops on Soul Side tours, the album was really only available in the US on a cassette tape label, called ROIR out of NYC. Also on ROIR was the Bad Brains first full-length release. Notably Henry Rollins sang with the Ruts at a reunion gig in 2007 and in 2012 the Ruts DC have reunited to release Rhythm Collision Volume 2.
